Hard Tissue Biomechanics
Bone and teeth, which are biological hard tissues, possess a composite microstructure consisting of inorganic mineral crystals and organic collagen molecules. In recent years, efforts have been made to develop artificial bone materials that mimic these microscopic composite structures. However, the mechanical role of collagen, particularly its mechanical interaction with apatite, is highly complex and occurs at a very fine scale. As the details of these interactions remain unclear, the realization of such biomimetic materials has not yet been achieved. Our laboratory aims to elucidate the relationship between these microscopic composite structures and their mechanical properties by investigating the effects of demineralization and mineralization on the mechanical characteristics of hard tissues.

Design of Biomimetic Biomaterials
Microscopically, bone is a composite structure composed of inorganic mineral crystals and organic collagen molecules. To achieve the mineralization of such polymer matrices, the Polymer-Induced Liquid-Precursor (PILP) process has attracted considerable attention. This technique enables the facile fabrication of mineralized tissues that inherit the structural characteristics of the original polymer matrix. Consequently, it is expected to contribute to the development of biomaterials that possess hierarchical architectures more closely resembling those of natural bone, together with enhanced mechanical functionality. In our laboratory, we investigate the relationship between the structural characteristics and mechanical properties of bone-like mineralized materials fabricated using the PILP process. We also conduct research on the development of bone-mimetic biomaterials based on fish-derived collagen.
